Condition
Lateral epicondylalgia
Eccentric loading and conservative care for lateral elbow tendinopathy.
ICD-10-CM: M77.1
Lateral epicondylalgia — commonly called tennis elbow — is pain on the outer side of the elbow caused by irritation of the forearm tendons. Despite the name, it's usually linked to repetitive gripping and lifting rather than tennis, and can make simple tasks like holding a cup surprisingly painful.
Physiotherapy, particularly progressive strengthening exercises, is the most effective long-term treatment. In this guide we cover assessment and evidence-based loading and conservative care for lateral elbow tendinopathy — practical guidance for clinicians and clear explanations so patients understand why gradually loading the tendon, rather than resting completely, gives the best results.
